General theory
The oxygen content of the air decreases at altitude. In order to be able to absorb the same amount of oxygen, we have to breathe in more often than usual. This “lack of oxygen” (= hypoxia) also causes a unique natural reaction in our body: more red blood cells (erythrocytes) are produced and microcapillary length growth is stimulated during active training. As a result, more oxygen can be absorbed in the blood and transported to muscles and tissues, where it is essential for the metabolism. If the organism is repeatedly and actively confronted with high altitude climates, there are a number of positive adaptations:
  • a
  • Improved oxygen intake, transport and utilization in the blood
  • Optimization of cell metabolism, improvement of fat burning, better utilization of carbohydrates
  • Increase in physical and mental performance
  • Shorter regeneration time
  • Strengthening of the immune system
In the LOXYMED® centre it is possible to simulate the low-oxygen content of the altitudes. The training can be carried out without extensive preparation and follow-up work and the rooms can be entered and exited at any time.
Effects of hypoxia
The term hypoxia comes from the Greek and describes the state of a lack of oxygen in the arterial blood or in the tissue of organisms compared to normal conditions. This is caused by a reduction in the partial pressure of oxygen (pO2) at sea level (NN) of around 212 hPa or by a reduction in the oxygen content of 20.94% by volume in the air. The lower partial oxygen pressure of the LOXYMED® high-altitude climate leads to a lower oxygen saturation in the blood. The body reacts to this deficiency situation with a multitude of adaptive reactions. The production of red blood cells is increased, which than can transport more oxygen and the length growth of blood capillaries is activated. Outside the LOXYMED® high altitude climate, the body uses the improved oxygen binding and oxygen utilization for increased energy production. In particular, fat burning and the utilization of carbohydrates are optimized sustainably. A disturbed metabolism can be gradually brought back into its healthy balance.
Goal of hypoxia training
Hypoxia training in elite sports has been the standard since the 1960s when it comes to increasing individual performance. Various adaptation reactions of the organism to the altitude-related lack of oxygen lead to optimizations in all relevant systems of the body, which can sustainably increase the athlete's performance. These positive effects are of course not limited to high-performance athletes. Every athlete, regardless of their level of performance, benefits from hypoxia training. Current medical results confirm that individual training therapies under certain hypoxia conditions achieve effects that cannot be achieved with traditional drugs. The considerable reduction in therapy-related drugs, e.g. in the case of high blood pressure or a disturbed sugar metabolism, are the result of optimized vascular supply and recovered metabolic processes. The immune system also regulates itself positively and bronchial-asthmatic diseases experience a significant improvement. The organism needs less time for regeneration and stress reduction. The effects are completely the body's own reactions without any negative health side effects.
Areas of application
LOXYMED® uses the extensive results of the last decades on the positive effects of exercise in high-altitude climate conditions. This research has been driven forward since the beginning of the 20th century and further investigated in medicine. The resulting findings are used in the LOXYMED® centre in a wide range of medical applications and are used for metabolic and orthopaedic rehabilitation, the treatment of respiratory diseases, prevention, top-class sport and alpine studies. All training programs are optionally possible on treadmills, rowing ergometers, bicycles or cross trainers. Changing the devices is not a problem. Our location in Berlin also offers KINESIS-muscle balance training for strength endurance.
