02.02.2023 | Le Nouvelliste | Top ski athlete Loïc Meillards secret training room
Interview with Loïc Meillards from February 2nd, 2023 by Julien Carloz, Le Nouvelliste, Watson.ch

Loïc Meillard's secret training room

For the first time in his career, the skier from Hérémence trained in a hypoxic chamber to simulate altitude. He emerged stronger than ever. His trainer tells the story of metamorphosis.

Patrick Flaction, you have been supporting Loïc Meillard for several years and started working with him in hypoxia before the season. What did that mean?
They were 90-minute sessions consisting of "classic" exercises (strength training, coordination, etc.) but in a hypoxic chamber, i.e. simulating high-altitude conditions. The aim of such training is to improve oxygen transport to the muscle.

So you were in a room, pressed a button and landed at 3000 m, right?
That's about it, yes. We have a hypoxic room at the Spark Center in Sion. It's connected to a touchscreen to adjust both altitude and temperature (editor's note: usually between 19 and 21 degrees). The mechanism is as follows: a machine takes and "processes" the outside air, i.e. it separates the particles and restores the oxygen/carbon dioxide/nitrogen ratio to the desired level. This air then pulsates into the room, very pure air and constantly renewed via air conditioning.

You subjected Loïc to these conditions a few months ago. When does the athlete no longer benefit from the effect of this type of preparation?
It's hard to say because the idea wasn't to do endurance. We hypothesized that if Loïc manages to improve his muscular qualities in hypoxia, that is, in more difficult conditions than normal, he could enroll his neuromuscular abilities that allow him to grasp the altitude differences in alpine skiing.

So you trained your body and brain at the same time?
Exactly. This is the whole idea of such preparation: to benefit from motor control capabilities to better understand the existing altitude differences in alpine skiing, where some starts are given at 2500m for a finish 1000m lower. I only worked with Loïc this fall. We wanted to see if it would benefit him.

So what?
His feedback is positive (editor's note: the skier won his first World Cup giant in January). He told me that he felt better during the effort and benefited from better breathing.

Loïc Meillard also told Le Nouvelliste that he had difficulty quantifying the effects of hypoxia on his own performance. You, who have both hindsight and experience, are you able to do this?
Not really. I am like him. You know, we did a lot last summer with his coach Matteo Joris. We focused on many details that, taken together, led to the very good results that Loïc has today. It is difficult to extract some of them, let alone quantify them.

Is the work at "height" reserved for the preseason? Can we imagine some sessions in the middle of winter?
Yes. We have also conducted one or two recalls during the season as the hypoxic qualities last for approximately three months.

This type of session, in which you recreate certain racing conditions and elevation differences, seems so simple to us that we are surprised that not all skiers benefit from it.
Because you had to think about it! Let me remind you that before Dick Fosbury invented the back roller, high jumpers crossed the bar flat on their stomachs. Why had no one thought to change their approach? Because it took time and research to advance the discipline.

If hypoxia preparation is slowly becoming democratized, it may be because it has not always had a good reputation. In the past, some have even considered it a form of doping
There is a big difference between artificially altering your blood, which is clearly doping, and training at altitude, which is also clearly not. It has never been said that all mountaineers are doped. However, if their hematocrit were measured in a cycling race, they would likely be immediately disqualified.

The difference lies in the fact that mountain climbers develop in a natural environment, while hypoxia enthusiasts use an artificial process designed to manipulate performance.
I am not aware of any criticism that has been made in the past, but one thing I am sure of today is that training in hypoxia is not viewed as doping by the authorities, and I don't see it that way myself either.

27.10.2010 | Matthias Jahn defends World Cup title in South Korea
Matthias Jahn defends World Cup title in South Korea.

With a commanding lead of 22 seconds over the second place finisher, Matthias Jahn won the World Cup

Matthias Jahn:
While two years ago at the World Firefighters Games in Liverpool I had to run up a normal stairwell to secure victory, today I ventured into new territory and completed my first outdoor stair run. The premiere against the strong international competition was successful and was crowned with the world title. After the mass start, 1.1km (110m) had to be covered before the first stages had to be mastered. Until then, I held back discreetly and only increased the pace once I got to my familiar terrain of the stairs. By the time we reached the finish, after 1,407 steps and a total of 370 m, the gap to second place Jean aptiste Lamitte from France grew to 22 seconds. Overall, it can be said that I did very well with unusual conditions (irrhythmic running, different heights, lots of oxygen and daylight). I managed the 16:29 minutes, but it was one of the hardest of my career so far.

Matthias Jahn is supported by EUROPEANSPORTS at the LOXYMED center for altitude training in Munich.

Hertha BSC relies on the competent support from LOXYMED

Since spring of this year, Hertha BSC has been the first club in the German Bundesliga to have an internal altitude training area for its players. With the technical equipment from LOWOXYGEN SYSTEMS, two training rooms were created directly above the first team's cabins, in which training can be carried out at an altitude of up to 4,500m.

In recent years, Hertha players have already used the premises and the training methodology support of the LOWOXYGEN altitude training center (then TOSMA) and the LOXYMED Berlin GmbH altitude training center that opened in Hellersdorf last year.

Based on many years of experience with competitive athletes in artificial altitude climates and in collaboration with LOWOXYGEN SYSTEMS GmbH, the LOXYMED Berlin altitude training center supports the sports science and methodological work of the team and trainers in the Hertha House. Given the considerable training effort and the high frequency of competition during the Bundesliga season, altitude training is intended to be used in particular to build basic endurance, regeneration and rehabilitation in order to prevent injuries and counteract the decline in performance of injured players.

Using a breathing gas analysis, training conditions can be individually adapted to the athlete. Training in high altitude climates is carried out without a mask. Dipl. sports scientist Henrik Kuchno (LOXYMED Berlin) is in charge of the altitude training area at Hertha BSC.
